Equity-Centered Strategic Planning
Clients tell us far too often that their prior strategic planning process fell short, and that their people don’t fully believe in it.
“Our strategic plan? It sits on the shelf.”
“I’m not sure anyone felt their voices were heard. We know who is going to make the decisions.”
Conventional planning approaches can often feel rushed and opaque, and lead to a plan that not everyone fully buys into. Further, the process itself can reinforce bias, exclusion, and power dynamics that hinder the organization when not done with an intentional emphasis on equity. While we do not believe there is a singular solution or right way to facilitate an equity-centered planning process, this paper outlines some of our thoughts on the topic after supporting over a dozen organizations in strategic planning and culture change.
We will outline seven dimensions of strategic planning and include reflection questions and practices that you can apply to your organization's planning process.
We hope you find this helpful and look forward to any conversations on the topic.
